NAME

XIYANGGUAN

LOCATION

On the lateral side of the knee, in the depression above the
lateral epicondyle of the femur, between the femur and the tendon
of the biceps femoris.
In the hollow above the lateral epicondyle of the femur at
the knee, between the bone and tendon.
Located approximately 3 cun superior to GB-34 Yanglingquan, with
the knee flexed, in the depression superior to the lateral epicondyle
of the femur and anterior to the tendon of the biceps femoris
muscle.
When the knee is extended, the point is 3 cun above
GB-34 Yanglingquan, lateral to the knee joint, in the
depression between the tendon of the biceps femoris and the femur.

NEEDLING

Perpendicular insertion 1 to 2 cun.

Straight insertion 1.5 to 2.5 cun, causing distention
and soreness possibly extending to the medial aspect of the
thigh.
Puncture perpendicularly 0.5 to 1 cun.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

According to several classical texts , moxibustion is contraindicated on this point.

NOTES

Pathogenic Cold tends to concentrate in the lateral aspect of the knee and may be treated by using this point. This is a valuable local point for pain along the lateral side of the knee which extends upward along the thigh. It is particularly indicated for problems of the ligaments and tendons of the knee. This point is said to raise the body temperature. It improves circulation and relieves pain in the opposite shoulder.
